Oz Homestay – Handbooks for Student and Hosts

Oz Homestay’s Sarah Walmsley, Operations Manager, commissioned Martalli Design to design two handbooks for Oz Homestay. One for students, explaining how a homestay works and the expectations they should have of one, and the second booklet for the host families looking after the student.

Who are Oz Homestay?

Oz Homestay are a New South Wales based business that specialise in bringing foreign students into Australia and matching them with Australian families for the duration of their study in Australia.

Sarah Walmsley, Operations Manager for Oz Homestay commissioned Martalli Design to design two handbooks for Oz Homestay. One for students, explaining how a homestay works and the expectations they should have of one, and the second booklet for the host families looking after the student.

Why a handbook?

Oz Homestay’s website is rich with information for students, hosts and educational providers but the handbooks had a slightly different goal. They were to be compact, succinct and downloadable. The booklets had to be something that could be read while travelling, shared with friends and importantly with the student’s families.

The PDF (Portable Document Format) lent itself very effectively to fulfilling the goals required by Oz Homestay. In addition the handbooks could be modified to deal with limited bandwidth/speed of Internet connection.

Clarity and values

The design and appearance of the handbooks needed to convey values that Oz Homestay offered to both students and host families. The handbooks had to be clear and unambiguous and convey important information to students and families, being mindful that for almost all students and families, English is a second language.
